Real Life Crime is as Frightening as Fantasy

Horror often departs from reality and goes into fantastical plots that sacrifice truth for screams. That’s a lot of fun, but things can be even scarier when a horror movie is focused on crime. Instead of aliens or zombies, we’re left with the fear that the criminals from the movies we’ve just watched might be real… and they might be hiding around the corner.

Some works of horror take inspiration from crimes that actually occurred in the real world. The Girl Next Door is an infamous – and stomach-churning – example. Others invent crimes that seem plausible, such as Se7en. Most of these stories show the crime unraveling, but not all of them have happy endings.
