Although the Twilight series may have convinced you that vampires are relatively new creations, that is not the case at all. Everyone’s favorite bloodsuckers have been around since the dawn of horror. Interestingly enough, the rules that vampires are based on have changed very little throughout the storied history of the monster’s place in literature and film.
Although they are up for interpretation, the most concrete vampire rules largely stay the same. As posited more than a century ago in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, vampires rest all day, turn people into vampires by biting them, can be defeated by garlic, and sparkle in the sunlight. Okay, that last one isn’t always the case, but you get the gist of it.
There have been a number of different vampire rules that have been scattered throughout the stories, books, and movies depicting vampires. Many outline them in the story by having a character describe them, while other times we learn the particular rules of vampire lore along the way.
