We write a lot about punk and goth fashion. One of the most important parts of that attire is the pants. But what does goth look for when choosing pants? And what does it mean to really want a good pair of goth or punk pants?
For Pants, What Does it Mean to be Punk or Goth?
The gothic subculture has its own style and fashion trends, which are different from those of other subcultures. The punk lifestyle is similar, with lots of overlaps between the two. That is definitely the case with the pants that they wear.
Goths often wear velvet or leather pants with high boots or combat boots. They may also wear jeans with studs on them or ripped jeans styles. Streetwear punks often wear denim, leather, metal spikes or studs, chains and military-style boots. Again, the styles aren’t synonymous with each other, but they also overlap a lot. In general, women and girls tend to prefer tight fitting clothes while men and boys like loose-fitting clothing styles more often than not. But that certainly isn’t always the case. As well as many people worry about finding the right plus size goth fashions, since not everyone has the same body type.
We’ve all heard the phrase ‘dress to impress’. For goths, it’s sometimes more like ‘dress to scare’. Pants are a crucial element of this attire and can make or break your outfit. They often are dark, have a high waistline, and fit snugly around the legs. These elements help highlight your figure while simultaneously making it difficult for others to see what’s underneath. But that said, it’s important to outline the “baggy” look, since some are specifically going for that more casual and comfortable direction.
“Goth people dress in velvet, lace, fishnets, leather, and gloves, often in dark colors,” says Umair Syed, fashion designer for Cicinia. “Hair is dyed in black or people like to go for cramped hair with dark eye-liners, nail paints, and lip colors. The goth style is inspired by the Victorians, Punks, and Elizabethans.”
With that diversity comes a lot of different options for goth and punk pants. There are many types of pants that you can choose from when dressing in these gothic styles:
High waisted pants – these are popular among goths because they make your legs look longer by creating an illusion that your body is taller than it actually is;
Jeggings – these are elastic-waist pants made out of denim;
Jeans – Well, it doesn’t get more straightforward than with the most iconic type of pants out there. You can’t really go wrong there.
The length of your pants can also play an important role in your look. Traditionally, goths wear long pants that reach all the way down to their ankles but some opt for shorter styles as well. This is especially true if you’re going after an emo look or perhaps want something more casual instead of formal wear.
Both goths and punks often love wearing boots with their pants so it’s a good idea to have them on hand before heading out on the town at night with your friends (or alone). It adds another layer of protection from the elements as well as making sure that you don’t get too cold while walking around under the moonlight.
We have a list of men’s goth pants specifically for them, so here we’ll concentrate on women’s pants and jeans for that perfect goth or punk aesthetic.
